reparameterized FACADE

RESTRUCTURING THE FACADES OF AN AGING CONCRETE BUILDING THE HEART OF TILBURG SHOPPING AREA, USING PARAMETRIC DESIGN METHODOLOGIES

The concept is based on biomimicry principles, taking trees and leaves as a metaphor for shelter and privacy , and photosynthesis for self-sustainability, additionally to the interactivity with the surrounding and adaptivity, simply a tree can be an endless source of inspiration, for the sake of this studio we chose some to base our design on.

Parametric design requires to design and program the relations between the project components rather than designing the components itself. To achieve that, we summarized these components into essential elements. Then run the algorithm that we designed upon it. We started by populating the existing building volume with a 3-dimensional array of points. The points locations shifted according to the Effect of multiple factors. Each of these factors has a different way of interacting affect the point cloud in different displacement patterns according to its nature. The resulting point cloud of this adaptive process will form a base for Voronoi cells that shape the new design.

Before and After

Considered factors used to determine the point cloud of the form started; these points are the base for the later form.

Epidermal cells are the surface layer cells of a tree leaf, and the one directly interacting with Air, Water, and Light. As shown in cross-section, in 3d space they are staked in 3d Voronoi arrangement, by following the same geometry we can create a double-layer facade. And define a new way of creating privacy in the heart of the public area.

The resulting double-layered facade as in the walls of the epidermal cells are also arranged in the Voronoi distribution as accrues naturally among cells, with separating layer of Electricity generating algae which dim’s color also serves as a visual barrier when needed.
